summer reads...


for this summer, here are the books that i am going to bring along with me to the beach or some far away hideaway where no one can reach me..not even my beluved. chos!



actually, i have already started reading the sense of an ending and so far, i luv what i am reading. i luv julian barnes's style...economical in words but his prose is powerful. it's better than watching a movie in three d..the feelings and characters are more real.






(i have read this book for the nth time, but i am in luv with franny and zooey, so i am re-reading it again. possibly along with jd salinger's other classics..such as catcher in the rye and raise high..)

does it have to be that long? will you wait forever for the one you love? sorry, i am a bit sentimental right now...as if! i just finished watching  muli on dvd  starring two of this generation's best actors -- sid lucero (intense and brooding) and cogie domingo (sad and soulful) -- playing gay lovers. their affair spanned more than 30 years (it started in 1969 and ended when gma was already the president). i love! (the oh so sexy sid lucero) when they met, sid just came out of the seminary. he decided to come home after his mother died. home is in the picturesque and romantic baguio. he turned his back on being god's servant because he did not agree with the religion's rigid standards on homosexuality (you know, love the sinner but not the sins).  he ended up running his parent's hostel in baguio city. longing for something worthwhile to do, he joined the communist party. only to be disillusioned again when he found out that the party did...

"i don't want to inherit your past mistakes. you can't expect me to correct them for you.." rome shouted at the other end of the phone. i could picture him actually; his pale, ghastly excuse for a face all red; his spiky short hair all standing up as if on a gun salute; his small mouth stretched into a wide, big o as though he was gasping for help. not a handsome sight. not the man i fell in love with three years ago. it was a cold day in december. there was a bit of a sun when i woke up at around eight this morning, but now it was all gone. hidden by this thick, grey cloud. i was shivering. i was wearing a flimsy striped cardigan that i bought at a bargain at one of lane crawford's outlet shops in ap lei chau. underneath the cardigan was a black ralph lauren v-neck shirt. i was looking forward to a bright sunny day before the winter sets in. i was wrong. already late for my appointment, i was rushing to the mtr station when the mobile phone...

filipino women on the verge of.....greatness

the year two thousand and thirteen is proving to be a great year for lovers of philippine cinema. after a good harvest at the cinemalaya in late july to early august (please click  here  to read about some of my cinemalaya reviews),  came the sineng pambansa national film festival all-masters edition (whew!) and the first cinefilipino film festival. the last two festivals, held one week apart in september, also featured films that were beyond the ordinary. if vilma santos heralded the cinemalaya festival, her erstwhile rival as queen of philippine cinema nora aunor was clearly the biggest come on of the cinefilipino festival. coincidentally (or not!), if ms. santos' entry at the cinemalaya festival, ekstra, was the top grosser in terms of box-office receipts, ms. aunor's ang kwento ni mabuti likewise earned the most among the cinefilipino entries. so whoever said that both actresses' luster at the box-office had diminished through the years is probably hal...
