things to luv about on the road, the movie

forget about the story. you are better off reading the book (which does not offer much of a story either. it's more of a collection of travel sketches, impressions about the people and places that jack kerouac disguised as sal paradise have met and fell in luv with and even hated.)
having said that, the movie adaptation by walter salles (an expert on road movies having directed the motorcyle diaries) is luvable, dreamy, seedy, nostalgic and brings us back to the time when sex, drugs and jazz ruled while a generation of lost souls, young poets and intellectuals wandered around looking for their center and refusing to be part of the boring status quo.

the film received mixed reviews, but i luv it.
here are the things that i especially luv about the movie (beware - some spoilers follow):

- garrett hedlund. ruggedly handsome, sexy, unafraid. a true adventurer. his character is the soul of the movie (and of countless books written by jack) and garrett succeeded in bringing to life one of literature's most beloved hero/anti-hero -- dean moriarty. jack kerouac based dean's character on neal cassady, a would-be writer, a juvenile delinquent and a great lover of both men and women.
garrett reminds me of the young brad pitt in thelma and louis and of jude law in the talented mr. ripley: gorgeous, sexy, easy-go-lucky, vain, greedy, a true lover of lyf.

- kristen stewart. if you hated her expressionless, catatonic face in the twilight saga, you will love kristen here. she is a revelation. her prowess as an actress is showcased here. she is a sweet, naive, needy, vulnerable young girl in one scene, a seductress and a mistress of her own universe the next. just lyk garrett, kristine is fearless in bringing to life the character of luanne, dean's young bride. oh did i mention that she has a lot of sex scenes in the film, showing off her nakedness.

- garrett hedlund's nakedness. yes, the movie also capitalises on garrett's animal appeal with his naked body in full display in some scenes.

- beautiful cinematography. the picturesque shots of the countryside, the wild west, the old san francisco, the cotton farm, can trigger a wanderlust in you and will make you want to hop on a train and go elsewhere. i swear it's that luvly.

- the threesome between garrett, kristen and sam riley (sal paradise slash jack kerouac). it's not one of the most erotic shots that i have ever seen, but it's good enough.

- the potent sexual tension and chemistry between garrett and sam. too bad they didn't have any scene together doing it in bed. but i won't be surprised if in real life, jack and neal did it. the attraction between them is too palpable to ignore.

- the gorgeous male cast. aside from garrett, there is also sam riley and tom sturridge (playing a character based on poet allen ginsberg, who is also the lover of dean. in real life allen is in luv with neal cassady. at one point, he even lived with neal and his wife in one flat and the three of them slept together in one bed.)

- the talented supporting cast led by amy adams, viggo mortensen and kirsten dunst.
