nora still reigns supreme
the brouhaha stirred by nora aunor's entry to the metro manila (popular, mediocre) film festival - thy womb - only proves that the superstar still reigns supreme in the local show business industry. only ms. aunor can rekindle and reignite the decades old rivalry among her rabid fans and that of ms. vilma santos, another respected institution in the moviedom.
(confession: i also luv ate vi. who can forget her performances in relasyon, t-bird at ako, broken marriage, sister stella l, pagputi ng uwak, pag-itim ng tagak, burlesk queen? but i'm a norarian at heart.)
to say that ms. aunor won the award because she is the superstar is to diminish the worth of her performance in the movie. she won because she was the best among the nominees in the category. in fact, she gave out her best performance yet in thy womb - sincere, heartfelt, quiet. no hysterics, no shouting, no slapping. she is almost unrecognisable, she is completely lost in her role.
if you do not know who she is, you might think that the director, mr. brillante mendoza, hired an ordinary person to play her role.
$$$$$$$
admittedly, while her talent continues to develop, her stature at the box office has diminished. but it doesn't mean that we - lovers of great cinema who fell in luv and empathised with her in bona, banaue, tatlong taong walang diyos, pacita m, walang himala, condemned, merika to name a few - should stop watching her movies just because the fickle fans have thrown their support to someone else - younger, prettier.
as she mentioned in her acceptance speech at the awards night, ms. aunor will continue to make quality films even if only a handful of people will watch it.
now, that's a true artist talking. i luv!!
$$$$$$$$$
the film deserves the best picture award. no other entry in the filmfest is of festival quality, and its lead actor bembol roco, who delivered one of his finest performances since maynila sa kuko ng liwanag - should have won as best actor.
&&&&&&&
speaking of the pretentious mmff - why don't they just stop the pretension and just take it for what it is - a bunch of the most commercial films that filipinos luv to watch during the holidays. why can't the government or any of its institutions engaged in the promotion of local art comes up with a real film festival, one that will showcase the best of filipino cinema just like the mmff of old when we have movies like brutal, insyang, moral, kadete? why don't they hold it, months before december to avoid an overlap and unfair competition?
the government should offer not only recognition but tax incentives as well to make the production of quality films a viable venture because let's face it, movie making is quite expensive.
only then can we stop this yearly debate on why such mediocre movie won the best picture award when other less commercial with lots of artistic merits was more deserving.

that's all mga vaklush!!! happy new year. remember, iwas paputok ha!
